(Last updated November 19, 2007) -- I am editor at Reason, the magazine for free minds and free markets; author of the new McCain: The Myth of a Maverick, and I do a bit of music and blogging on the side.
For most of 2006-2007 I was assistant editorial pages editor of the Los Angeles Times, overseeing the section's web operations, shaping the editorials, writing all over the page (print and virtual). For most of 2002-2005 my primary employer and outlet was Reason, where I was associate editor (October 2004-January 2006), media columnist (April 2004-April 2006); and longtime contributor to the must-read Hit & Run weblog.
From July 2002 to October 2004, I wrote a regular "Letter from California" column for the Review section of Canada's National Post newspaper; before that I had semi-regular gigs at the Online Journalism Review, the lefty-politics website WorkingForChange.com (for whom I covered Ralph Nader's 2000 presidential campaign); and the now-defunct L.A. tech/biz mag Zone News. I have freelanced for the Columbia Journalism Review, L.A. Daily News Orange County Register, LA Weekly, ESPN.com, Salon, Wired News, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, The Hardball Times, AlterNet, The Walrus, The Daily Star of Beirut, and dozens of other publications. My favorite topics range from media to international affairs to all things California to baseball (see a more complete list of topics and article-categories to your left).
I have written, edited and/or consulted for more than a dozen start-up media companies, including the nefarious Digital Entertainment Network, the acclaimed Tabloid.net, and the stillborn LA Examiner newspaper project. Before 1998 I lived for eight years in Central Europe, where I co-founded the region's first post-communist English-language newspaper, worked as UPI's Slovakia correspondent, and managed a Business Journal in Budapest.
For a representative sample of my writing, try here. To see hundreds of other articles and columns under my byline, just roam around the various categories on this site; nearly everything from 1998 onward is posted, and I'm slowly typing in the Central Europe archives.
