Three Political Tidbits I Learned at the Star Chamber: I usually go to this monthly drinks/confab thing up at Yamashiro above Hollywood, organized by journalist-turned-Hollywood guy (and a great guy at that) Scott Kaufer, and populated with an eclectic mix of journos, Hollywooders and blog-people.
Last night my little pockets of conversation were mostly about presidential politics (already!), and three broad trends emerged in the small sample sizes:
1) Many Republicans & right-leaners glumly believe Hillary Clinton will be president; while zero Democrat and left-leaners share their view.
2) Most people I talked to (who were mostly Republican) think (unlike me) that America is too racist to elect a black guy.
3) After months of me asking people "What are these skeletons in Bill Richardson's closet?", I finally got some specific second-hand dirt from multiple sources. Though impressive in his alleged appetite and lecheryhood, I still don't think it will matter unless he miraculously emerges head-to-head against Hillary, if then.

New Reason Article: "Be Afraid of President McCain -- The frightening mind of an authoritarian maverick": Reason was nice enough to put it on the cover, and to make it available online right away. You could reward them by buying a copy on the newsstand or something!
My previous McCain noodlings here.

Nikke Finke, Some Time Close to Hour Four of the Oscars: The horror. The horror. Stop the show. Put it out of its misery. Emmanuelle, who's "working," keeps toggling between Finke's madness, the Fug gals' wit, and Defamer. Having personally attempted live comedy the other day, they all have my sympathy ... but I can tell by the sounds of the cackling in the room next door that it enhances the viewing process more than watching this insufferable Gore-apalooza.
Here's the deal -- I live in East Hollywood. I do not like that Bush fellow. I'm worried about Global Warming. I really liked An Inconvenient Truth (except for the horror bits where Robot Al whispering his haunted memories about some river, his son, Katherine Harris, whatever). I'm really happy that lesbians rock the mic and get married and make babies with evil David Crosby's sperm; I'm on that team (well, not David Crosby's, but you get the point). But watching these people congratulate each other for their enlightened views, their activism, their spreading of "awareness," kinda makes me want to do one-handed pushups with Brent Bozell, or at least lick my hand & slap that Guggenheim kid on the back of his Gore-loving neck. It is also possible that I have a bad attitude.
